Sidmouth's elegant Regency villas and seafront terraces sit beneath wooded hills, so the gutters here cop it from two directions — leaf and twig off the trees inland, salt and gull mess off the sea. Those ornate Victorian rooflines often have fiddly hopper heads and long runs of downpipe that block out of sight until the next heavy shower sends water sheeting down the front of the house. Up around Woolbrook and Sidford the housing is largely 1930s semis with clay and concrete tile roofs, and under the canopy off Peak Hill and Salcombe Hill they hold moss thickly on the shaded side. That moss sloughs off into the gutter as grit and fragment, and mixed with the leaf washed down the slopes it sets into a dense mat. We clear it from the drive with the vacuum, empty the hoppers, and make sure the downpipe is running free before we leave.
The newer estates out toward the Bowd and Sidbury are a different proposition — modern silicone and K-Rend elevations with deep plastic guttering. They look low-maintenance but the humid valley air greens them fast, and roof runoff carries that growth into the runs. A blocked downpipe on a pale rendered gable streaks the whole elevation, so we keep them clear and put the pipes through a flush. It is the cheapest insurance going against a wall that then needs a full soft-wash.
Sidmouth has a large retired population and a steady trade in holiday cottages, and a lot of those owners simply do not want to be near a ladder or are not in town when a gutter starts overflowing. Prices open at £80 + VAT for a standard semi or detached, and single-storey places are usually less. In Sidmouth the taller Regency and Victorian houses with long downpipe runs on the front take more time than a Woolbrook semi, so we price each job on the day.
