Exmouth's seafront terraces take a hammering from the salt winds off Lyme Bay, and many of the Georgian and Victorian houses along The Beacon and Louisa Terrace have been painted over the years to hide it. On a solid wall, that paint traps salt-laden damp against the fabric instead of letting it dry. The older heart of Exmouth is where our paint-removal work concentrates. The Georgian and Victorian seafront terraces along The Beacon and Louisa Terrace, and the streets in the Maer Road conservation area, are largely solid-wall, built before cavities and relying on the wall breathing to shed moisture. Paint them and the salt-laden damp that blows in off Lyme Bay gets held against the fabric, and you see it in blown render, flaking coats and spalling brick. We take the unwanted paint off with low-pressure superheated steam so the wall can dry and the original face comes back, rather than reaching for another sealing coat.

Round the estates at Littleham, Withycombe and Brixington the picture is different — later render and coatings over-painted more than once, sometimes in colours the current owner has inherited and wants gone. On the seafront and around the marina we get the regular graffiti and tag calls, especially over the busier summer months. Steam shifts a lot of spray paint on its own, and a graffiti-specific remover deals with the rest at low pressure, so there is no scoured, over-cleaned patch left where the tag used to be.
