Out on Berry Head the exposure is relentless, salt and sea fret driving into the paint until it blisters, chalks and peels off the render. Those painted fronts have to be kept up, and when a coating fails it needs taking back to sound before it's repainted. Stripping a failed coating off soft render this exposed is a steam job: DOFF superheated steam softens and lifts it at low pressure, back to a sound surface, without the abrasion that would open the render up to more salt.

Up at Higher Brixham, Wall Park and Sharkham the 1960s to 80s semis and the exposed clifftop builds carry masonry paint and K-Rend that weather hard in the wind off the bay. On the shaded, salt-touched walls the coatings flake and lift. Standard masonry paint steams off readily; where a wall has been over-coated in a modern plastic or elastomeric paint that won't shift cleanly — common on the render fronts that have been redone a few times — we soften it first with a poultice or chemical stripper and take the residue back to sound.

Those painted fronts get repainted often on this coast, and layers build up, so knowing when to strip and when to leave well alone saves real money — and we will give you the straight answer. If the paint is broadly sound and only failing in patches, a full strip is overkill and we will say so, quoting the repair instead. Where a coating has well and truly blown in the salt, though, taking it back to sound first is the only way the next repaint holds through a Berry Head winter. The visit and quote are free.
