The Moore & Franks approach in Exeter

A freshly cleaned block-paved drive in St Leonard's or out on the Newcourt and Cranbrook estates looks superb for a fortnight — then the green creeps back into the joints and the weeds start lifting through. That's the Exe-valley damp at work, and it's exactly why sealing pays off here. We're based five minutes away on Ferryman Way in Topsham, so Exeter is home turf, and after we've cleaned a driveway or patio we seal it once it's properly dry — binding the kiln-dried sand so it stops washing out, deepening the colour and slowing the moss and weed regrowth our humid city air feeds. Matt or wet-look, your call. Twenty-five years at it, insured to £5m, and a free quote with no pressure.

Exeter driveways run the full range of ages, and the finish we recommend follows the paving. The buff and brindle block drives common across Heavitree and Pinhoe take a wet-look seal well, bringing back the colour the damp has flattened. Older concrete aprons and the reconstituted-stone slabs behind the Wonford and St Thomas semis suit a matt seal that tidies them without looking glossy. We match the sealant to what is actually down, rather than selling one finish for every job.

The reason sealing earns its keep in the city is regrowth. Leaf litter off the mature trees around Pennsylvania, Duryard and the Quay drops into open joints every autumn, rots down and hands moss and weed seed somewhere to root. Bind the kiln-dried sand into those joints and there is nothing loose left to colonise, so the green returns far slower on the shaded, north-facing runs where it usually shows first. After that an annual rinse keeps on top of it.

Timing the job around Exeter's weather is half the skill. Sealant has to go onto paving that is clean and fully dried through, and in a humid river city that can mean leaving a day or two between the wash and the seal so no moisture is trapped underneath, which is the usual reason a seal blisters or clouds later. We keep an eye on the forecast, book the two stages to suit it, and leave the drive to cure properly before you park on it again.

Our Exeter customers are right on our doorstep. We cover the wider EX1, EX2, EX3, EX4, EX5 postcode area and the surrounding villages (St Leonard's, Heavitree, Pinhoe, Topsham, Pennsylvania, Exeter Quay).

How it works

A clear, repeatable process.

No surprises, no upsells. The same method every job — that's how you get the same result every time.

  1. 01

    Clean first

The paving is fully pressure-washed and any weeds removed — sealant only goes onto a properly clean surface.

  2. 02

    Dry out

We let the blocks and joints dry through — trapped moisture is the main reason a seal fails, so we don't rush this.

  3. 03

    Re-sand joints

Kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints where needed so the sealant has something to bind.

  4. 04

    Seal & finish

Even coats of matt or wet-look sealant applied across the surface, then left to cure before use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions we get asked the most. If yours isn't here, drop us a line — we reply same day.

Sealing is quoted per job with a free written quote, so there is no fixed rate. The main thing that moves the price in Exeter is the size of the surface, since a long block drive on the Pinhoe or Heavitree estates takes more sealant and more coats than a small courtyard patio. We price the clean and the seal together.

All of it, EX1 to EX5. We regularly seal drives and patios across Heavitree, Pinhoe, St Thomas and Wonford, out to the newer estates, and in the conservation streets around Southernhay. Being just down the road in Topsham, the city and its surrounding villages are easy for us to reach.

It comes down to the look you want and the age of the blocks. Wet-look deepens faded colour, which suits the buff and brindle block paving common right across the city; matt keeps a natural, un-shiny finish that flatters older concrete and reconstituted stone. Both bind the joint sand the same way, and we will show you samples.

Send a few photos of the drive or patio with a rough idea of the area and we will price it in writing, usually the same day. We work Monday to Friday. Since sealing follows a clean and a proper dry-out, we plan the two visits to land in one settled dry spell.
