Right on the front — the gardens along Queen's Drive, around The Maer and up toward the Marina — an artificial lawn deals with something inland plots never see: fine beach sand carried on the wind. It behaves nothing like the sold-in infill; it packs hard into the pile, holds salt and moisture against the fibres, and grinds at them underfoot. Clearing that windblown grit back out is a big part of why a seafront lawn here wants a firmer, more thorough brush than one a mile inland.

Plenty of Exmouth's laid turf is not at ground level at all. The seafront and Marina apartments have balcony and roof-terrace runs of artificial grass for the view, and those catch salt spray and gull mess with nothing to shelter them. Up there the pile bleaches and greens on the shaded side of a parapet while staying bone-dry elsewhere, so it wants a gentler, even clean rather than the heavy de-moss a shaded ground-level lawn needs.

Because the salt air keeps everything that bit damper, Exmouth lawns tend to want cleaning more often than the once-a-year that suits a sheltered inland garden — twice a year is common on the exposed plots that catch the prevailing south-westerly off Lyme Bay. A plain wash with fresh water now and then between our visits helps as well, taking the salt off the pile before it draws moisture back in and gives the algae a head start.
