The historic Barbican waterfront is where Plymouth paint-removal work is at its most careful. This is old limestone, porous and breathable, and generations of paint and soot have built up on it. Where masonry paint has sealed the surface, the damp off Plymouth Sound is held in stone that needs to shed it. Abrasive blasting would erode the soft limestone face along with the coating, which is exactly why it is the wrong tool here. We work these walls with low-pressure superheated steam, lifting the unwanted paint and soot gently so the original limestone comes back and the wall can breathe again.

Plymouth also keeps us busy with graffiti — on Barbican and city-centre walls, shopfronts and side elevations, where tags go up faster than most towns see. Steam shifts a lot of spray paint on its own, and a graffiti-specific remover clears the rest at low pressure, so there is no scoured patch left on the stone or render. Out through Devonport the rendered and painted post-war terraces are often over-painted more than once, and up in Mannamead and Mutley the Edwardian villas carry their own tired or inherited coatings. All of it the same gentle method, matched to the wall in front of us.

Every Plymouth job opens with a test patch on a discreet area.
