The Moore & Franks approach in Torquay

Torquay paving sits in a mild, humid microclimate that growth loves — salt-laden air off Tor Bay, sea fret rolling in, and dense tree cover on the steep slopes around the Warberries and Wellswood. A block-paved drive at Chelston or a terrace patio in Wellswood greens over and loses its jointing sand quickly in that damp, shaded warmth. Sealing after a clean is what makes a finish last here: once the paving's properly dry we bind the sand against the marine damp, lift the block colour and slow the moss, algae and weed regrowth. Sealed surfaces also shed the leaf-litter off the wooded hillsides far better. A wet-look finish flatters the grander villa drives; matt stays natural. Twenty-five years, insured to £5m, free quote.

Torquay's grand villa drives are only part of the picture. Around St Marychurch, Babbacombe and Lincombe there are large sweeping frontages in block and stone; down in Ellacombe and Upton the terraced houses have small paved forecourts; and Shiphay and Preston add plain post-war concrete. Each wants a different approach, so we walk the surface, agree matt or wet-look to suit it, and prep and seal accordingly rather than treating a villa sweep and a terrace forecourt the same.

On these steep, wooded slopes a seal works hardest as a barrier. Salt off Tor Bay and the sea fret keep unsealed block faces and joints damp, and the shade from the mature trees stops them ever drying, so the green film takes hold fast. Sealing shuts the open pores so salt and moisture stay on the outside where a rinse clears them, and the bound sand leaves the growth nothing to root in. On slopes this green nothing stops the weather, but a sealed drive holds it off for years rather than months.

The shade that causes the problem also complicates the cure. A drive tucked under trees on the Torquay hillsides can stay damp long after the surface looks dry, and sealing over that trapped moisture is the main reason a seal later clouds or peels. So we clean the paving, let it dry right through, and pick a settled dry spell to seal, splitting the job across two visits where a shaded drive needs longer than a day to come good.

Our Torquay customers are typically within 45 minutes of our Exeter base. We cover the wider TQ1, TQ2 postcode area and the surrounding villages (Babbacombe & Oddicombe Beach, Cockington Village, St Marychurch, Wellswood, Torre Abbey, Kents Cavern).

How it works

A clear, repeatable process.

No surprises, no upsells. The same method every job — that's how you get the same result every time.

  1. 01

    Clean first

The paving is fully pressure-washed and any weeds removed — sealant only goes onto a properly clean surface.

  2. 02

    Dry out

We let the blocks and joints dry through — trapped moisture is the main reason a seal fails, so we don't rush this.

  3. 03

    Re-sand joints

Kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints where needed so the sealant has something to bind.

  4. 04

    Seal & finish

Even coats of matt or wet-look sealant applied across the surface, then left to cure before use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the questions we get asked the most. If yours isn't here, drop us a line — we reply same day.

It is quoted per job with a free written price, never a fixed rate. Size leads the cost in Torquay, where a large villa sweep around Lincombe or St Marychurch takes far more sealant and more coats than a small terrace forecourt in Ellacombe. We price the clean and the seal together in writing.

All of TQ1 and TQ2. We seal drives and patios around Babbacombe, St Marychurch and Wellswood, down through Ellacombe and Upton, and out to Chelston, Shiphay and Cockington. Torquay is a regular run for us, and we cover the town and its villages.

It often is. A wet-look sealant restores the depth of colour on the larger coloured block drives common around the Torquay villas, giving them a rich, just-laid look. On plainer concrete or older stone a matt finish suits better. Both bind the joint sand and slow regrowth, so it is mainly about appearance.

Photos and a rough area are enough for a written quote, normally the same day. We work Monday to Friday. Because shaded hillside drives can be slow to dry, we book the wash and the seal into one settled window and let a damp drive take the extra time it needs.
