Exmouth sits right where the Exe meets the sea, and that salt-laden coastal air does a number on hard surfaces. Driveways, seafront patios and the rendered frontages of those big Edwardian villas along the front pick up green algae and black spotting faster than most inland towns. Add the sand that drifts up from the beach and you've got paving that looks tired within a couple of seasons. Exmouth's holiday flats and rental properties turn over all summer, and a tired, green-streaked patio or entrance path puts guests off before they reach the door. We get a lot of quick between-let cleans of shared paths, bin stores and communal parking, plus private drives and decking on the streets behind the seafront. Astroturf lawns are popular in the smaller Brixington and Withycombe gardens too, and we wash those through at low pressure with a pet-deodorising treatment where dogs use them.

Being right on the estuary mouth, hard surfaces here weather harder than a mile or two inland. Concrete and block drives near Queen's Drive and The Maer take a constant film of salt and wind-blown grit that grinds into the surface and darkens it. Timber decking suffers most, going slippery and grey where the marine damp never lets it dry. We clean decking at a controlled pressure that lifts the algae from the grain without furring up the boards or splintering them.

The older parts of town, around the railway and the streets climbing off Rolle Street, are tight for parking and access, so we plan visits to work around the traffic and keep hoses clear of pavements. After a coastal clean we often suggest an optional biocide top-coat, applied once the surface is dry, to hold back the quick regrowth that estuary humidity encourages. It is not essential, but it stretches the time between cleans on the shadier north-facing paths.
