Plymouth's scale means solar arrays of every kind, from the waterfront flats around the Hoe and Barbican to the sprawling estates out at Plympton and Plymstock. As a coastal city it gets the salt spray off Plymouth Sound, and as a built-up one it adds urban grime and traffic film to the mix — a combination that dulls panels faster than most realise. The leafy Victorian avenues of Mutley and Mannamead carry large villas with generous roofs, plenty now fitted with solar, and the mature trees lining those streets keep the pitches shaded and slow to dry. Moss and green algae take hold on the north slopes and wash down onto the panels below. On a big array the shaded, filmed-over glass loses a noticeable slice of output. We clear the whole run from the ground, no ladders near the slate.

New estates like Sherford and Saltram Meadow are full of modern K-Rend homes that came with panels fitted as standard, and a great many have never been cleaned since handover. It is easy to trust the frequent Plymouth rain to keep them rinsed, but the salt and city film off the Sound clings to the glass and hardens rather than washing away. A first proper wash on one of these arrays usually shows a clear jump on the meter.

The steep terraced streets running down toward the water, common around Stoke and the older parts of the city, put a lot of panels two and three storeys up on tricky ground. Our carbon-fibre poles reach them from firm footing below, so there is no ladder balancing on a sloping street and no weight on the roof.
