Tiverton is one of our home bases — we run a landline here — so this mid-Devon town is somewhere we know street by street. The old town has its stone terraces and the grand Heathcoat-era frontages, while estates spread out toward Blundell's and the Tidcombe side. Sitting where the Exe and Lowman meet, it pulls in plenty of valley damp that greens up glass and frames. Tiverton throws up two very different sorts of glazing. In the old streets around Westexe and Elmore you get slim Victorian sashes packed tight together, while out on the newer estates such as Blundell's Heights it is big uPVC units and roof lanterns on modern render. Pure water suits both: it rinses the many-paned sashes clear without a blade, and covers the large modern sheets without the smears a cloth leaves. Sills, seals and lantern glass all go in the same pass, whatever the age of the house.

The Grand Western Canal and the trees along the Lowman keep a lot of the town shaded and slow to dry, and that is where north-facing glass greens fastest. Sap and leaf litter settle on sills, reveals and conservatory roofs through the year, turning to a film that pure water lifts cleanly off the pole. There is no salt this far inland, but the standing damp more than makes up for it, so the glass here works just as hard.

Because the town sits on one of our regular rounds, we can usually add the odd extra clean without much notice. Most homes settle on quarterly, though anything under the canal-side trees often wants it more often.
