Totnes climbs from the river Dart up its famous narrow main street, packed with listed Tudor and Georgian frontages, timber jetties and small-paned period glass. The main street climbs steep and narrow through the heart of Totnes, largely given over to shoppers and with almost nowhere to park, let alone stand a ladder. We work the frontages there off the pole from the pavement, and often early, before the independent shops and cafes open and the street fills up. Reaching three storeys of glass from the ground keeps us out of everyone's way and off the historic stonework entirely.

Across the river in Bridgetown and out on the Follaton estates it is a different job again: slate-roofed terraces and newer render homes with bigger, more modern glazing. The valley damp still greens the north-facing panes, but there is more surface to cover and less that is fragile, so the pole makes short work of it. Frames, sills and glazing bars all get washed with the glass, whether it is an old sash or a wide uPVC unit.

The oaks and beeches along the Dart keep much of the town shaded and slow to dry, so conservatory roofs and north-facing glass green readily and a shorter interval than quarterly often pays. Conservatory roofs are quoted by size at £50 + VAT up to £90 + VAT and cleared at low pressure with nobody on the panels.
